I’ve always had a weird soft spot for surf rock. When I was pretty young I was given the soundtracks to Pulp Fiction and Pink Flamingos, both of which shaped a lot of my taste as I was growing up. They both instilled a love of surf rock, garage, instrumentals, and just plain dirty rock and roll. I feel like almost any song by the Growlers would fit perfectly into either of those collections. It’s solid pop songwriting with a lo-fi feel, dripping with surf guitar and a consistent be-boppy beat. They refer to their style as “beach goth”, which is pretty appropriate. I haven’t listened to all of their records, but the ones I’ve heard I like and there are a few songs like this one that have made their way into pretty heavy rotation.
