2019/02/17 – Simon & Garfunkel – Cecilia

This song sparks a fair bit of nostalgia in me from some drunken late-night singalongs in my 20s with friends I don’t really keep up with any more. I always love songs that are kind of sad or depressing but where the music is fun, positive and/or boisterous. The song has such a fun vibe from the very start that it’s easy to overlook the heartbreak they’re singing about in the chorus and first verse, and even with the way the song ends it still feels bittersweet. Given the duplicitous nature that Cecilia has already shown, how long until someone else takes your place again? While they are such very different songs, it kind of reminds me of Mamma Mia by ABBA, in that they are both fun and positive sounding songs about cheating and potentially abusive partners, the heartbreak they cause, and accepting them back despite that pain.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Last time I heard it: Last Thursday. It came up in our work chat when we had a ticket by someone named Amelia and a colleague just threw out the “You’re breaking my heart” line in passing. It stuck in my head immediately, and I threw it on Spotify. Side note: the Spotify radio station after listening to Cecilia is solid, lots of classics from bands like the Kinks, T-Rex, Sly & the Family Stone, Gilbert O’Sullivan and more, and a huge percentage of those tracks fit the same sad theme but happy song.
