2021/04/30 – Death Grips – I’ve Seen Footage (Covered by Kero Kero Bonito)

I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of Death Grips. I’ve only ever listened to a few of their albums, and in those experiences, there are only a few tracks that have really resonated with me. The original version of I’ve Seen Footage is one of those tracks that has worked its way into a few of my playlists, and I revisit it periodically.

Similar story with Kero Kero Bonito, in that I haven’t really delved too deep into their catalog, but where they differ is I pretty consistently enjoy Kero Kero Bonito tracks (obligatory link to the beautiful Bugsnax), and will revisit them far more often.

Yesterday, the almighty algorithm threw this at me while I was wondering through YouTube, and the idea of the more traditionally cute and fun Kero Kero Bonito covering one of the more abrasive, harder rap acts in recent memory was too intriguing not to check out. Since then, I’ve been wondering around my house occasionally just throwing out an “I’VE SEEN FOOTAGE” to no-one in particular (often greeted by looks of confusion by my dogs, and once my partner).

This is a fun cover that mostly stays true to the original song without any stylistic changes that I was sort of hopping for, but I love the video because it reminds me of super fun show going experiences in the before-fore. I also find it amusing that while on very different ends of the musical spectrum, there does appear to be a pretty wide overlap in the fanbases of both of these groups, since the crowd immediately recognizes what’s happening and jumps right in singing along.

My Ratings – Original Song: ⭐⭐⭐ Cover Version: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (just for capturing a great live show moment)

Last time I heard it – Last night, when YouTube decided to bless my recommendations with it.
