05/31/17 – The Raconteurs – Carolina Drama

The opening line of this song I believe sets the tone pretty well, “I’m not sure if there’s a point to this story…” After listening to this song a couple dozen times over the past few years I’m pretty sure the only point to the story is the actual telling of it. There’s no destination in mind, and no real resolution to the story. We as the audience left with questions, but ultimately I think the main question is “Why do I care?”

While there isn’t a point to the story, it is engrossing, and a lot of fun to listen to. Jack White and the rest of the band do a great job of painting the scene for the listener and keeping us enthralled throughout the tale, while the instrumentation slowly builds into a pretty awesome climax when the brother comes in singing to himself. It’s an interesting if  lackluster story that’s told masterfully and with style, making it one of my favorite songs by the Raconteurs.

On a different note, Jack White kinda pisses me off these days. His weird feud with the Black Keys (who have also gotten pretty annoying, and I don’t really like the direction they’ve taken musically), and his general attitude where he thinks he’s some kinda savior of rock and roll have soured me on him in the past few years. I haven’t really enjoyed much that he’s done since Blunderbuss. The gimmicky vinyl for Lazaretto was pretty neat, but the album itself never really hooked me.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Last time I heard it: A couple days ago on a random playlist while working.
