08/04/2017 – The Folk Implosion – Merry-Go-Round

This is a pretty deep cut. Out of all the acts in Lou Barlow’s career (Founding member of Dinosaur Jr with J Mascis, Sebadoh, Sentridoh and the Folk Implosion) I feel like Folk Implosion was probably the the least popular, with the exception of the single Natural One from the Kids soundtrack that played on ’90s rock radio pretty consistently.

I’m not sure why I know this song. I never really got into Folk Implosion. I got into Dinosaur Jr for a while, and loved Sebadoh (Flame is still a jam I revisit pretty regularly, and Harmacy is a fantastic album), but think this just song just kinda popped up somewhere and ended up on a few playlists of mine ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The song itself is pretty good. I do love the guitar lick, and the production is great. The lyrics are mildly clever, and kind of fit the standard cynical ’90s alt-rock feel. Overall, I’d say this song is a B. It’s good, enjoyable. Good enough that I gave it a thumbs-up in Google Music, and hear it every couple months.

Bonus: Here’s Lou Barlow covering Foreigner’s Cold As Ice on solo acoustic guitar. Because why not.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Last time I heard it: Yesterday, driving around from errand to errand. Prior to that it had been a while since I’d listened to anything other than hip-hop.
