01/04/2017 – Tapes ‘n’ Tapes – Ten Gallon Ascots

I was pretty late to the party with Tapes ‘n’ Tapes. I’d heard people talk about them after their debut album The Loon came out in 2005, but I didn’t really give it a good listen until nearly a decade later after seeing them absolutely kill it at a small show in Houston a few years ago.

This album is solid all the way through. It’s hard to pin down stand-out tracks, but I love the way this song starts with a meandering, almost jazzy feel and then dives into some heavy places as it progresses. I feel like the band takes influences from all over the place, which lends it a very unique sound.

I got really into this album a few years ago and I have a lot of the tracks on different playlists I listen to, but the recent success of Car Seat Headrest renewed my interest, as they sound pretty similar at times.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Last time I heard it: Sometime in the last week. The racing game I’ve been playing lately can play playlists, but can’t shuffle them for some reason, so the huge playlist with hundreds of tracks I made plays in order and this was the first album on it, so I’ve heard it a pretty good amount recently.

What do you think?
