What’s the opposite of a love song? There are hip hop diss tracks, breakup songs that lament the loss of a former lover, and then there’s this song. Is a spite-ballad a thing?

The Mountain Goats lead singer John Darnielle in an interview once said that people contact him asking him to play this at their wedding a lot. He went on to say those people seemingly missed the point. He would consider playing it at your divorce hearing though.

Personally I’ve always been an All Hail West Texas guy when it comes to the Mountain Goats, as there is a lot of nostalgia in it, but this song also holds a special for me.
