10/21/2016 – Johnny Cash – Hurt

This is still in my head from watching the Logan trailer last night. I’ve always had a lot of respect for Johnny Cash, but I’ve never delved too much into his library other than the classics and the hits. While his originals are fantastic, I appreciate anyone who can do covers the way he does, and this is a perfect example. The way he can take someone else’s song and make it uniquely his own, and have it fit so perfectly into his musical persona. The original by Nine Inch Nails is also a good song, but has such a different feel to it. I remember reading something where after hearing the Johnny Cash version Trent Reznor basically said that the song was his now.

There are a lot of other great examples of his covers as well, Rusty Cage by Soundgarden and I Won’t Back Down by Tom Petty are a few of my favorites.

This song and video are both incredibly sad. It’s got such a melancholy tone throughout, and the video is a very candid statement about Cash’s then declining health and the state of his home where it was filmed. Cash died within a year of filming.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Last time I heard it: Yesterday, on the Logan trailer.
