07/30/16 – Kendrick Lamar – King Kunta

I got lucky enough to see Kendrick when he was touring in support of 2015’s To Pimp a Butterfly at his ACL live tapingTPAB was already my album of the year, but seeing him perform added a whole new dimension to my appreciation for him and what he does.

I had kind of fallen off hip-hop for a few years when TPAB came out. I was familiar with good kid, m.A.A.d city, but never truly delved into it (that has since been rectified). Coupled with Run the Jewels Kendrick reignited my interest in rap.

This song is a more standard radio friendly rap song than the rest of the album. It’s super fun and funky, but isn’t a great example of Kendrick’s masterful songwriting abilities. For that there are a lot of other awesome examples.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (To Pimp a Butterfly as an album is a solid Five stars though)

Last time I heard it: Last night at a party.
