Yes I know this is a rewriting of a totally kick-ass MC5 song, but this is the one that was in my head, and to be honest, the one that I was familiar with first. Also, the specific line I have in my head this morning is “Mission control, calling supernova, the hotlines rocking you can come on over…”

Presidents of the United States of America was one of the first bands I ever called “my favorite band.” I was 11 when their self-titled album blew up in 1995 and Peaches and Lump were playing seemingly everywhere. It was one of the first CDs I ever owned because I begged my mom to get it for me. I still occasionally listen to it, it’s a fantastic, fun album from start to finish.

I’ve always been curious about their songwriting methods. It really feels like they just wandered around their backyard and wrote little tunes about all the weird little bugs and critters they saw running around. They’re also very innovative with the modifications they’ve made to their instruments, which just adds to the fun playful nature of their songs and personality as a band.

I’m definitely going to have to listen to this whole album again today 🙂
